In the chaos of the Muslim ban, the rule of man trumps the rule of law.

Donald J Trump's executive order banning Muslims from entering the US threw the world into chaos yesterday, as US citizens, lawful permanent residents and visa holders found themselves stranded abroad, detained at airports on arrival to the USA, or helplessly waiting outside immigration checkpoint for news of sick and vulnerable family members who were held incommunicado by US immigration officials who refused to obey a US federal court order.

Immigration officials and the State Department were given little to no notice of the ban, and were in disarray when it came into effect.

An unnamed senior US immigration official was so offended by the chaos and illegality that he spoke extensively and critically of the ban to reporters from The Intercept -- presaging a near future in which US government employees open up back-channels to the press to complain about the administration's racist, unconstitutional and illegal conduct.

He said the ban "took everyone by surprise" and that they "had less than a day to review vague details...This EO took hours, and we never, never saw the final draft."

The official described some of those turned away in the chaos: "a young mother of a U.S. citizen child, and students at some of the nation’s top universities publicly recognized for their outstanding achievement.

These students had already undergone rigorous U.S. government vetting before being admitted to the country, and had only traveled abroad briefly over their winter break."

According to the official, "They were only informed [that their visas had been terminated] when they attempted to use their visas to seek admission and were denied.

Even though they were ignorant of the termination, they were still charged with violating U.S. immigration law and given a five-year ban to future admission."

The ban also resulted in bona fide refugee claimants being returned to countries where they faced detention and torture.

Most chillingly, CBP officials refused to comply with a federal court order suspending the ban, and would not discuss their decision with US Members of Congress who intervened on behalf of detainees.

At LAX, CBP officials insisted that a visa-holding Iranian citizen named Sara Yarjani would have to fly to Copenhagen, and when Rep. Judy Chu and Rep. Nanette Barragan asked to speak to the officials about the court order, CBP said they reported to Donald J Trump and hung up on the Congresswomen.

A Texas resident named Stephanie Felten who contacted The Intercept said that her sister-in-law, an Iranian green card holder who has lived in Chicago for over a decade, was stranded in Iran after traveling there last week to visit family.

With her in Iran is her three-year old daughter, an American citizen, who now has no way to return to the United States with her mother.

Iran has promised a reciprocal ban on American citizens traveling there, effectively making it impossible for the child to see her father or the rest of her family.

“Nobody is providing any answers right now,” said Felten. “We’re just trying to confirm what we’re hearing.

You can read the executive order and try to make determinations but then news breaks that even people that are dual citizens are being turned away. Everyone is unsure where to turn.”

Trump Invokes 'All Lives Matter' Logic To Erase Jews From Holocaust

The White House confirmed it purposely excluded Jewish people from its statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday.

Now we know for sure: Jews were purposely omitted from the White House’s official statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told CNN that Jewish people weren’t mentioned because, “despite what the media reports, we are an incredibly inclusive group and we took into account all of those who suffered.”

That explanation from the Trump administration sounds familiar to anyone who paid attention to the so-called alt-right’s campaign to belittle Black Lives Matter. They invented “All Lives Matter.”

To those peddling in this slogan, it was unfair to focus on police killing black people because others had been killed, in other ways, and no one deserves “special” attention.

The subsequent “Blue Lives Matter” slogan claims it is unfair to give attention to black people killed by police so long as police are also killed in the line of duty.

Slate was among the first to report, “Team Trump Just ‘All Lives Matter’ed the Holocaust.”

But Twitter lit up with people noting the similarity, especially with former Breitbart chief Steve Bannon now calling the shots in the White House.

When the official White House statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day didn’t mention Jews, some assumed it was a terrible oversight. Turns out it wasn’t.

The White House made the decision not to list those who were persecuted by Nazis, including gays and lesbians, and instead labeled them all as “innocent people” killed by “Nazi terror.”

The CEO of the Jewish Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, called that “puzzling and troubling” even before Hicks confirmed it was intentional.

It’s disturbing because history is factual, as pointed out by John Podhoretz for Commentary magazine in response to the Hicks comment on CNN.

“No, Hope Hicks, and no to whomever you are serving as a mouthpiece,” wrote Podhoretz.

“The Nazis killed an astonishing number of people in monstrous ways and targeted certain groups—Gypsies, the mentally challenged, and open homosexuals, among others.

But the Final Solution was aimed solely at the Jews. The Holocaust was about the Jews.

There is no ‘proud’ way to offer a remembrance of the Holocaust that does not reflect that simple, awful, world-historical fact.

To universalize it to ‘all those who suffered’ is to scrub the Holocaust of its meaning.”

“There are no word limits in presidential statements,” wrote Josh Marshall, editor for Talking Points Memo.

“A more logical and worthwhile approach would be to note the various groups who were victimized.

This isn't accidental.

The new administration is riddled with anti-Semites and those who want to cater to anti-Semites.”

Others pointed out that minimizing the suffering of the Jewish people reeks of Russia.

Roberta Kaplan, the attorney who represented Edie Windsor at the Supreme Court when gutting a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act, noted the history.

President Trump will allow his senior political advisers into the Situation Room as part of a reshuffling of the National Security Council released Saturday, while the Joint Chiefs chairman and director of national intelligence will be invited to the Principals Committee if officials think it's worth their time.

"The Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff, the Assistant to the President and Chief Strategist, the Counsel to the President, the Deputy Counsel to the President for National Security Affairs, and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget are invited as attendees to any NSC meeting," the new memorandum says.

Trump's chief of staff is former Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus.

Steve Bannon, who stepped down as executive chairman of Breitbart News to join the Trump campaign, is chief strategist.

Kellyanne Conway, a longtime Republican pollster, is counselor to the president, having joined the campaign at the same time that Bannon did to advise Trump during the final stages of the presidential election.

Those officials are the vanguard of Trump's political operation, tasked with managing his team and strategy and often making the public case for his policies.

Conway, for instance, previewed Trump's scheduled call with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a Fox News interview on Friday.

"If Vladimir Putin wants to join the United States in having a serious conversation about defeating radical Islamic terrorists … we call them murderers here," she said.

"And, if another nation that has considerable resources to join with the United States of America to defeat radical Islamic terrorism, then we're listening."

The reshuffling also touches the Principals Committee, which is "the Cabinet-level interagency forum" for discussing national security issues.

Under Trump's reorganization, the director of national intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in this case Gen. Joe Dunford, will be invited to attend only when "issues pertaining to their responsibilities and expertise are to be discussed."

Previously, they had a standing invitation to all Principals Committee meetings, based on a directive from then-President Obama in 2009.

Trump's team said they aren't trying to exclude anyone inappropriately. "More about respecting principals' time," an administration official told TIME.
