Donald Trump is the president of the United States.

The director of the CIA reports to him, as does the director of the FBI and the attorney general, who heads the U.S. Department of Justice.

It’s important to keep those facts in mind when assessing the president’s demand that Republicans in Congress investigate allegations that his phones were tapped by President Barack Obama in October, just before the election.

There is not one scintilla of evidence to suggest the allegation is true, and there’s plenty to suggest that it’s false. But that’s not the critical factor here.

No, what’s important to remember here is that the people who know definitively whether this claim is true — the people who run the FBI, the CIA and the Justice Department — all report directly to Trump and all are in a position to tell him, at a moment’s notice, whether there’s any merit to it.

They would know not only whether Trump was subjected to a court-ordered, fully authorized wiretap, but also whether Obama circumvented the courts, violated the law and commissioned government agents to conduct the sort of black-bag job that once was the specialty of former Nixon operative G. Gordon Liddy.

Yet after reading anonymously sourced reports from conservative media outlets that claim some sort of surveillance at Trump Tower might have taken place, Trump didn't reflect on his recent public condemnation of anonymous sources or his insistence that the media “shouldn't be allowed to use sources unless they use somebody's name.”

Nor did he pick up one of the White House phones — “The most beautiful phones I’ve ever used in my life,” he calls them — and talk to the heads of the FBI, CIA and Justice Department.

Had he done so, he’d have immediately learned whether his phones at Trump Tower were, in fact, tapped or whether calls from a foreign entity — in, say, Russia — to Trump Tower had been monitored.

Rather than do that, he took to Twitter and publicly asserted the wiretaps had actually taken place, tweeting: “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory."

He then described the former president as a “bad (or sick) guy” and, in a supreme fit of irony, described the actions of his predecessor as “McCarthyism” — a word that’s used not to describe political espionage but the actions of people who make baseless, politically motivated allegations against others.

Trump then dispatched one of his aides to make the rounds on television.

Unable to support her boss’ claim with any sort of evidence, Sarah Huckabee Sanders repeatedly tried to claim the president had never actually made the accusation and was merely wondering aloud, via Twitter, whether there was any truth to the allegation.

“He's talking about, ‘Could this have happened? Did this happen?’ ” spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told ABC News. “If this happened, if this is accurate … this is the greatest overreach and the greatest abuse of power that, I think, we have ever seen and a huge attack on democracy itself.”

Well, yes, and by the same token, if the Air Force is actually harboring space aliens at Area 51, that would be evidence of a massive conspiracy of lies at the highest reaches of the federal government.
(Cue the ominous organ music.)

So what are we to make of all this? Why would our president call for a costly congressional investigation into a claim he could verify or refute with a single phone call?

And if, as Sanders argues, he honestly doesn't know whether there's any substance to the wiretap claim, why did he spread the rumor and slander his predecessor without first attempting to ascertain the truth?

And, most important, why, after hearing that FBI Director James Comey was “incredulous” over his tweets and had asked the Justice Department to publicly refute them, did Trump still refuse to ask Comey the question his spokeswoman insists he was pondering: “Did this happen?”

There are only two plausible explanations: Either he already knew what he claimed was false, or he didn’t care whether it was false.

Either way, it was a reckless and irresponsible action for the president to take.

Has CNN learned nothing from its ill fated hiring of former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who consistently embarrassed the network by offering on-air analysis which was little more than Trump apologism?

Apparently not. At least Lewandowski was merely fired by Trump for incompetence.

Now CNN is hiring former Trump Communications Director Jason Miller, who departed the Trump administration amid an alleged sex scandal with a fellow adviser.

Three days before Christmas, the Trump transition team announced campaign adviser Jason Miller as the new White House Communications Director.

But just two days later, Miller announced that he was bailing on the job before it even began, citing a sudden desire to spend more time with his family.

But then as we reported on Christmas eve, fellow Trump campaign adviser A.J. Delgado took to Twitter and publicly accused the married Miller of being her “baby daddy,” implying that the two had an affair and that he had gotten her pregnant.

Delgado then deleted her entire Twitter account and she hasn’t been publicly heard from since.

But it very much created the appearance that Jason Miller had suddenly turned down the Communications Director job because of Delgado’s accusations.

Since that time, Miller hadn’t been heard from either, with neither one of them going on to play any role in the Trump White House.

And yet now Media Matters is reporting that CNN has chosen Miller as its latest political analyst.

To be fair, the alleged Miller-Delgado sex scandal was a matter of he said, she said (or more accurately, he resigned, she said, she deleted, both disappeared, no evidence was ever publicly offered either way).

But with Delgado’s unresolved accusation still hanging over Miller to this day, on top of the fact that Miller is a Trump loyalist who is unlikely to be willing to deliver any useful analysis for fear of offending Trump, it seems odd that CNN would hire him of all people to be its latest on-air face.

Did CNN learn nothing from the humiliation it faced the last time it hired a Trump puppet?

What I said was the hearings haven't even started yet, so while there may be no evidence of it right now, that could possibly change.

I do know that a lot of people associated with Trump were talking to Russians and denying it.But I'm sure just like Bubba and Loretta Lynch, that day on the tarmac in Arizona, they were just talking about golf and grandkids.
