California Gov. Gavin Newsom named Democratic strategist Laphonza Butler as Sen. Dianne Feinstein's replacement in the U.S. Senate after the longtime Democrat senator died last week at the age of 90, Fox News confirmed late Sunday night.

 Butler will finish out the remainder of Feinstein's term in Washington, D.C., ahead of the 2024 election. In a statement, the governor described Butler as an "advocate for women and girls, a second-generation fighter for working people, and a trusted adviser to Vice President Harris."

 "As we mourn the enormous loss of Senator Feinstein, the very freedoms she fought for — reproductive freedom, equal protection, and safety from gun violence — have never been under greater assault," Newsom added. "Laphonza will carry the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to break glass ceilings, and fight for all Californians in Washington D.C."

 Butler, president of EMILY's List and a former adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, will be the only Black woman serving in the U.S. Senate and the first openly LGBTQ+ lawmaker to represent the Golden State in the Upper Chamber.

I've read a couple of stories this morning that Newsom's diversity pick doesn't even maintain an address in California and is actually registered to vote in Maryland.

How does that work?

News to me. BUT the Constitution says she is qualified if she is a resident on the day she takes office. A voter registration in another State is meaningless to being a resident of a State. She could move there today and still be considered a resident by law. Changing your registration is an administrative function, not one that controls where you live. I can NOT be registered to vote and still be a US Senator or Congresscritter.

Feinstein has been a rolling corpse for a couple of years now, so yes, it was no major loss of any kind.

Agreed... but the fact that she is registered to vote in MD means that she maintains an address in MD, and still doesn't have one in Cali.

She gonna have to fix that before she can be sworn in.

I've seen no evidence she is residing in Maryland NOR registered to vote there. ALL indications are she lives in and works in California.

IF this can be proven, then she needs to be CHALLENGED prior to her being sworn in. If this is indeed the case, she is NOT eligible under the Constitution to take office as the California Senator. I am SURE that Republicans in the Senate are already looking at this hard.
