Because you can actually calculate pi using a certain number of mathematical equations. I used to be able to do that at Purdue but I've lost my touch. Pi is not just determined from guessing the circumference of a circle. It's also what is called a constant. Wrong. That does not explain why it is a non-repeating irrational number. A perfectly round circle does not exist. Nor, is the circumference of a perfectly round circle a quantifiable function of its linear radius. Actually, Pi does change with the roundness of the circle. If you construct a near circle with a thousand tiny lines linked together around a centerpoint, Pi (not true Pi, because its not a true circle) will be a rational number.
