And if you want to know WHY people "serve," just watch how they get recruited. Madison Avenue recruits people by promising them one of more of the following:
Career advancement;
Dad will finally respect you;
Adventure;
Personal achievement.
Nothing in there ^ about "service."

You have mistaken me for a sucker.
But I DID de-transition my "uber-patriotic" brother from a sucker to a realist. He came out of the military convinced that he was EVER so much more "patriotic" than I was. So I asked him to agree with me on a definition of patriotism. He claimed to "love the country" more than I did. So I axed him what it was, precisely, that he loved ABOUT it - seeing he hated half the people.
In the end, we agreed that a nation which safeguards our liberties is worthy of SUPPORT. And we agreed that it's hard enough to love your family and your neighbors, much less a whole **** COUNTRY. We agreed that "I love my country" is a **** narrative into which people are programmed through mind control.
In the end, he admitted that he had ORIGINALLY felt like a fraud in boot camp, when they talked about how much more patriotic he and his fellows were than regular people. How they were willing to lay it on the line cuz murka-stiffy. But in the end, he succumbed. He played along. And he began to buy in - and why NOT buy in? It was a lie that served him well. It was a lie, the denial of which would serve him ill. He is human. He bought in. So did all the other fellows, every one of whom, no doubt, felt like a fraud at first, too. Because, like my brother, they were there for self-advancement - not for a murka-stiffy.
Look, you can lie to yourself 'til the cows come home. But ya can't lie to me - I've lived a life. And I am not a sucker. I DO pay for the panties and pastries of suckers, though.

Not at all... I am not jealous of anybody still grinding, either for themselves or for a boss. My wife and I have embraced the roles of bon vivants and thorougly enjoy traveling, playing golf and pickleball, buying art, cooking gourmet meals, entertaining our family, friends, and neighbors, and babysitting our granddaughter. For the last twelve years, I have been living one never-ending long weekend.
Speaking of the weekend, you've got one coming up here tomorrow, don't you. Enjoy it, and enjoy punching back in on Monday morning! I'll pour a dollop of Bailey's in my second cup on Monday in your honor!

YMMV.... I get where you're coming from. I am not lying to you at all. You can't live my life nor can I live yours. And I don't think I am more patriotic than anyone else simply because I drove ships around for a couple of decades. I love my country. I am sure lots of people do. I happened to believe that the Navy was an honorable service, that it was a necessary part of maintaining our republic, and I **** LOVED the thrill of riding on a greyhound with a bone in her teeth. The fact that I could go to sea and experience that, and I got to go to all sorts of cool places all over the world, and got paid fairly good money to do it, and then, retire at an age when I could collect a great retirement check and start a SECOND career and earn a SECOND retirement and STILL be young enough to thoroughly enjoy it for years before I got too old to do so.
