cars today have no bumpers, made with cheap metal, what would have been a dented bumper now is front or rear damage that would cost thousands yet the manufactures charge 23,000 at least for new cars and even used cars are the same, no bumpers front or back and made with cheap metal.

Is there any new car with a bumper any more?
Want a bumper? Gotta get a pick up truck.
Those aren't cheap to fix either. Just went through that.

bumpers should be on every car, just a way for car manufacturers to keep costs down and put out cars as cheap as possible. all the car manufacturers are doing it.

That's not a pick up truck. Trucks are body-on-frame. A Maverick is a unibody construction like a sport utility.

But you're right about bumpers. Even trucks are fascia-over-reinforcement assembly these days.Image

either one will cost thousands to repair after an accident less than 2 miles an hour.

I just had a guy back into the corner of my truck 6 months ago. $3200.
The bumper had a dent the slightly bigger than an Oreo.
But it pushed into the quarter panel causing small crease and paint damage.
All paid by the insurance. No wonder that **** costs so much.

btw The taillamp with radar sensor (for traffic alert when backing up) is $750. A **** taillamp.
That didn't get damaged at least.

Pics show what I meant. Separate bumper on the rear.

The reason today's cars take so much damage is so that you won't.

It's called crumple zones. They are designed that way.

Cars in my early adulthood were junk after 100,000 miles. Today's cars get triple that. And if you have a wreck at forty, you likely walk away unhurt. That wasn't the case with the cars that didn't crumple.

I got slammed at a stop light. the seat belt even tightened, I was surprised no damage to anything not even the bumper. the car was fine. it was a 2002 cavelier.

Not cheap. Thin.

Gotta keep the weight down for mpg certification.

I worked on a program (won't say what vehicle) where the design, build preproduction, engine calibration, etc. had reached point of no return. It was going into production.
BUT...
Could not certify at mandated mpg. Last resort solution?
Change all the documentation to limit cargo carry capacity to 50 lbs (instead of 75 lbs).
That squeaked the mpg up just enough for that class vehicle. Image

Ain't that just par for the **** course. The one car that DOESN'T take damage is a Cavalier...

I have 3 cars with a combined age of 118 years and they all run very well.
It's been close to 30 years since I  made a car payment.
It takes effort,  and commitment to do this. Especially with the advent of computer controlled engines and drivetrains.

my  major beef is the total lack of actual bumpers.

I'm not sure how they game this old requirement these days:
Used to be that a 5 mph impact should not yield significant damage and cost.
This was meant for parking lot type "touch the other guy" while squeezing in.
It was also square hits as opposed to corner shots which are wholly unpredictable.

The whole thing changed over the years from the car in your picture.
People's safety is waaaay prioritized over damage control. You cannot even have corners on knobs for controls on the instrument panel. 3mm minimum radius so you don't get cut as easily.
There is what we used to call the "baby's head test": Can a 6" ball find a corner anywhere in the interior design that makes contact? If so, it must be rounded off.

There is even consideration for the hood: If the unfortunate accident does happen, does the pedestrian's head incur extreme trauma if it bounces off the hood? I don't think made it to international regulation . . . yet. Difficult to establish a standard on that one. But I could be wrong. Cell phones drive the need for soft front ends so pedestrians can read while walking... :loco:

Bumpers used to be bolt on and sacrificial (more or less). Now they are part of the aerodynamic effort to reduce drag. All cars have drag to contend with. Not all cars bash into things. Priorities are reflected in the product.

Like space-saver spare tires:
How many times do you actually need to change a tire?
Not often enough to carry a full size 60 lb tire around for 150,000 miles.

Priorities.
Please seat yourself.

I heard if a buyer with a credit score less than 650 will pay 23% interest for a used car.

That's just immoral.

You realize cars are safer now than they've ever been? There's a reason they don't have large rigid bumpers and have been replaced with crumple zones to help lesson the impact on passengers. Use your **** brain, maybe do some research before posting your **** senseless rants. Just the engineering alone behind the current front and back ends of cars is more expensive than throwing a bumper on it,
