Here's my take on all this. In the world before the internet it was absolutely vital to prevent mass movements that could lead to activities that threatened one group or another. Hell, it was the philosophy we spread globally after the Second World War and even further after the Cold War. That's also why I call myself a globalist. Now we have this thing called the internet. Every user has their own voice and now those with unpopular views are expressing themselves as individuals. This is probably the crux of the fight now. Are you censoring the "saying fire in a crowded building" or are you just someone who believes that immigrants are hurting the country? That debate is nothing new and this is largely the turf of social media companies who have moderators. Does Musk have a point that free speech should even include points you disagree with given it is coming from individuals?

Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.

The problems with social media are echo chambers and supporting algorithms. Freaks use to have a hard time finding one another. The internet allows fringe and even dangerous people to find one another and motivate actions they never would have taken in isolation. Algorithms ensure the things you view grow more and more extreme along your political or sexual bend.

Media Matters released a report by Hananoki on Thursday, which included screenshots of mainstream advertisements appearing beside pro-Nazi content on X. A wave of businesses, including IBM, Apple and Disney, subsequently suspended advertising.

The lawsuit by X — which claims interference with contract, business disparagement and interference with prospective economic advantage — said some of X’s largest advertisers were among the companies pulling their ads.

The lawsuit said that Media Matters manipulated the X algorithm by following 30 accounts made up only of controversial users and large companies, then undertaking “excessive” scrolling and refreshing.

“The overall effect on advertisers and users was to create the false, misleading perception that these types of pairings were common, widespread, and alarming,” the filing said.

Elon in an interview stated the ruse of misconception stemmed from 50 ads /posts out of a total 5.5 billion daily ads shown, hence the lawsuit...

a nefarious attempt to bring down Mr Free Speech...
