They can be fixed.RedheadedStranger » 01 Dec 2023, 8:00 pm » wrote: ↑ In most late model cars, yes... but give me an old Honda or Chevy with a manual tranny that's gone bad, and I'm swapping that out all day.
Cars from about the mid 2000's to present, are pretty much disposables. A major drive train issue renders them junk. At least to the average consumer

Of course they can, but the cost/return factor always comes into play.

I drive an '08 Tundra with almost 275K on the clock... all original drivetrain.
If my tranny crapped out, it wouldn't necessarily be worth spending 3K plus on a new one with a power plant that is just about at the end of its life, right?
The truck itself may be worth 10 as is... and with a new tranny, maybe 12 with the mileage on the engine.
Why not junk it, and just find another $12k truck just like it with less that 200K on it, and get another 75 to 100K out of it?
See how that works?

I have no issue with that whatsoever. I'm just looking at it from a consumer's point of view.
If I can break even on a vehicle, I'm good with that... but I'm not going negative if I can help it.
Someone like you?

Tell neighbor that Bob will get the transmission rebuilt for less GREENIES and lifetime warranty.murdock » 01 Dec 2023, 4:02 pm » wrote: ↑ Wants me to fix his transmission for him, but I declined. We aren't friends, the only time spoke to me was to say he didn't have time to shake hands with me 8 years ago. He won't find anyone in this town who can fix it, other than getting a dealer reman and sometimes those are bad. Besides after 40 years of that stuff I don't wanna do anymore. Hell I'd have to go all the way to fort Worth for parts and it's not worth it. He don't wanna pay what it's worth either. So looks like he will roll the dice with the wrecking yards.
