California Governor Gavin Newsom’s claim that crime rates in the state have hit “50-year lows” is mostly false. While national crime rates have decreased over the years, California has seen a recent rise in crime. The state’s violent crime rate is 31% higher than the national average, with aggravated assaults increasing in California while declining nationwide.
Newsom’s comparison to crime rates in the 1980s and 90s overlooks the current upward trend in crime, as indicated by the rise in violent crime rates in the state.“California’s violent crime rate increased for the second year in a row in 2022, while violence in the United States overall declined. But the state’s property crime increased only modestly and in line with the rest of the country,” the San Francisco Chronicle wrote.
