at least in MN...2022 they took total control of the state with an 18 BN dollar surplus (yes, with a B *insert eye roll here*)

they didn't take long to start the free for all spending basically telling the republicans to **** on every bill they brought up...the republicans wanted state SSI tax rescinded..."oh, we can't do that as it might cut into the budget too much...so only the lower tier people got theirs' cut...

they decided to "give back surplus monies" to the whopping tune of $268 *insert Homer Simpson WOOHOO here*...this week the IRS announced those rebates will be federally taxed because the legislature drug there sorry asses on the bill until 2 weeks after Joe announced Covid wasn't a threat and lowered the boom on tax giveaways on rebate checks...*insert guvna's feigned outrage here*

they pulled the smoke and mirrors trick claiming in one hand they cut 3bn in taxes while in the other hand they added 1bn in new taxes...

now every child, regardless of household income, gets a free pre-k thru 12 school lunch...

this week they announced the biennium budget forecast...for '24-'25, a 2.4bn surplus, for '26-'27? a 2.4bn deficit...the reason for the deficit, "school lunches are costing us more than anticipated..."

Ever notice how someone easily gets a bunch of money and blows it? If you work for your money, then you're often more careful with it. Many lottery winners are broke in a few years. Same way with big spending politicians. They blow money, but just raise taxes. Easy come, easy go.

exactly...I have no problem helping out those in 'real need'...but if ma and dad have more money than god, it's patently stupid...

You might ask yourself why the Republican politicians of Minnesota haven't taken care of the citizens.

This passed in 1992 in Colorado with Republican house and Senate and a Dem governor.

The Taxpayer's Bill of Rights (TABOR) Amendment was approved by voters in 1992. This amendment to the Constitution of the State of Colorado generally limits the amount of revenue governments in the state can retain and spend. Absent voter approval, it requires excess revenue to be refunded to taxpayers.

Our refund for 2023 will damn near cover our property taxes!

Today the Democrats are still trying to get their hands on that excess money, the voters keep slapping them down!

Socialist elements mixed with State Capitalism and some individual free enterprise
seems to work gloriously in China and Russia.

The numbers cannot be refuted. I wonder if its the homogenous make up and lack
of massive chaotic divisions like in America, where its always gridlock and sky screaming.

I doubt that's actual free enterprise or freedom.
 

On social issues, I am fairly libertarian. However, when it comes to the budget I have always been in support of a balanced budget. Just because a state has the funds now does not mean that they should spend it. I would agree that having 100% free lunch at public schools is a disaster.
