Israel, Sovereign nation?

If Israel is a sovereign nation, don't they have every right to defend their borders? The crazy thing about this whole conflict to me is that the same UN that created the nation of Israel also voted 13 to 1 (UK abstained) to a cease fire in the fight against Hamas. I'm not trying to take away from the rights of Palestinians who have been marginalized by Israel with their behavior. I just know that if any other nation had a terrorist group come into its borders and murder 1400 people in cold blood they would probably be up in arms too.
Nothing is easier than defending the status quo.
