I don't think very much of the metric you reference. I consider it meaningless, TBH.

It does have some relevance. During the cold war, when Russia and America where competing for who has the strongest military, Russia eventual collapsed because of those low metrics outside the military ranking. It was called the "Guns and Butter" theory. Guns being the strength of the military and Butter being the way of life of the people. When Russia increased the strength of their guns, the butter for the people was spread thin. It got to the point that they couldn't sustain their military growth without putting their people into poverty. Whereas America was able to sustain both. Most Americans, if not all, didn't have their way of life effected one way or the other when the guns were increasing in power. 

It's still that way to day. Russia may be increasing their military strength, but according to the metrics, that is only on the expense of society's butter. America can sustain both just fine.

No question the USSR did a poor job for the people. I agree with that. But according to Sumela, Russians are now wealthier than Germans based on PPP (the metric that matters), and Germans are doing pretty **** well - or so I understand, they being the economic leaders of Europe. 

Also, I disagree with your belief that America can sustain both just fine. It has only done so in THIS century thanks to the petro-dollar - and that is about to - oops, there it went. 

Saint ronnie changed the law so that Social Security Bonds are not fungible. They cannot be sold. Ever. To anyone. EXCEPT the federal government. The day the federal government chooses not to honor them, they are kindling. You understand? Fire fuel only - not salable on the open market like every other bond the government issues. 

So, the feds TAKE our money, and GIVE us paper - just as they do other bond holders like governments, banks, institutional investors. But THEIR bonds are fungible. The ones I bought at gunpoint are not. 

The bankers who create our $ out of thin air WILL be paid. And if the SS "trust" fund has to be made fire-starter for that to happen? Then that is what will happen. 

Tell me next Easter that our government can do both. I predict by then it will be doing neither. For that matter, I find the pretense that we still have a functional military a bit questionable. We will see what an army plagued by transgenders and dick suckers can do, if this government decides to pick on someone even half its size.

Russia's ruble and BRICS currency are backed by gold. We haven't had that standard since Nixon. The US dollar is backed by an abstract concept. So yes, I agree that is where my argument falls short. Nonetheless, we were able to sustain the 'guns and butter' after we abandoned the gold standard throughout the 70s and 80s, until the Soviet Union collapsed in 91.  I am not going to claim how we could have remained an economic power with a currency that is based on an abstraction. I don't know. But we did and still are.
