NATO was established to prevent the Soviets from invading Germany after WW II. There hasn't been any Soviets since 1991. So what is its purpose?

As far as I can tell.
Nato is a propaganda group- who all luv to dress up and do press conferences.
Where they all declare they are the best-is  of friends.

I can't see the term *NATO* in print without thinking back to 1978 when I was camped out in the woods on a NATO exercise and one morning found the blackest African Troop you ever saw squatting like a grasshopper and taking a dump in the sink that the rest of us used to shave and brush our teeth......

I couldn't believe my eyes...!
First thing in the morning and that's what greeted me inside the latrine tent.
I ran back to the tent we had that slept our entire platoon and told they guys to hurry up and check this **** out. 
One of my guys who ran back to see this spectacle was Black and when he saw the African squatting in the sink he said "SAY BRUTHA..WAT TRIBE YOU FRUM ...?"

I don't have any memories like that but I remember exercise after excercis like REFORGER sitting in the cold training for when the Soviet Bear was going to crash the Fulda Gap.

Where those of us stationed there were nothing but a speed bump to the English Channel

This was in the snow covered woods of Western Germany facing east with our 155 Howitzers hammering the hills to the east all day and night.
So what is the very last thing you would expect to see out there during a NATO Show Of Power...?
Well I'd say seeing an African Trooper taking a dump in my **** sink at 6 O'clock in the morning is pretty close to that.......

We were always told that if the Russians wanted to they could wipe us off the map in a matter of hours

I was also there right after the wall came down.  Apparently what we told about their equipment was pretty much BS.

What was a good thing to see was how the Germans dressed their homeless, skill less and drug addled  Hobos  in green army fatigues and gave them room and board in exchange for job training.
