walking away from million dollar mortgages. how low will home prices go? in the 1950's home prices were around 1 times ones annual income. and today in california. way over 10 times average annual income. in 1950's, no tv reception bill. no internet bill. no cell phone bill. but high percentage of annual income went to buy food. /// why the massive increase in the cost of shelter? government interference. in 1949 i built my first house. bought lot for $50.00. as i got money, i built. no bank loans. no realtors. no permits. no inspections. last year that house sold for 645k. a piece of junk.

Why is housing so expensive in CA? A few things to start off with.. supply of available land in the desired areas is low. Yes, plenty of land in the mojave or in Modoc county but that's not what is being discussed. Second, the relatively high incomes of some. Why sell a house at just above cost when you can sell it for $850K? if the guy down the street sold his modest home for $600K.. I can get at least that and so on and so on. There is more to it than that but those are the easiest to explain.
