Blue-collar workers won big in 2023, defying bleak predictions

The year began with a recession forecast but ended with substantial wage growth and record union contracts for hundreds of thousands of workersA year that started out with bleak prospects, including a widely predicted recession, shaped up to be a boon for the average American worker — and one of the most triumphant for organized labor in a generation.

More than 525,000 workers in the United States walked off the job in 2023, according to Bloomberg Law’s database of work stoppages, making it one of the three biggest strike years since 1990. Many of those strikes led to big concessions from employers, such as the landmark deal reached by the UAW in October.

Employers agreed to pay more for workers because of a historically tight labor market, meaning it proved more economical to boost wages and benefits than to try to find new workers or risk losing current ones.

Hatahs is really gonna hata this....because, at heart, they hata a Great America.

Now let's hear the American Kvetching Gold Brick explain why this is irrelevant to the American Working Man.....on whose behalf only Jessie "*** of the World" Watters speaks...

The unemployment rate, a key indicator of the labor market’s health, has remained below 4 percent for two years as of November, a stretch last accomplished in the 1960s. And hourly wage growth began to outpace inflation this spring after years of falling behind, boosting workers’ standard of living, especially the lowest earners.

I heard that once the kids reach the teen years and join mom and dad in the work force, blue collar families are almost up with their 1980s counterparts.

Hey, that's progress - give the pedo his due.

I'll take an at-bat, fruitcake.

Workers don't walk off their jobs when they're being treated right - so IMPLICITLY, you have admitted they had a high hard one up their asses when they pulled a johnny paycheck.

Employers having to pay more "because of a tight labor market" is fact plus narrative. Since we're going that route, here is MY narrative in the matter. There is no "tight labor market" except the one created by starvation wages. Workers aren't willing to work for free - what a shocker. Turns out "free-adjacent" is a non-starter, as well. So employers, to get workers, have to give them enough to eat. Bowl me over with a feather, fruitcake.

Workers made their own luck, in SPITE of the policies you support - not because of them.

 No charge, fruit. Image

Biden Ends 2023 With 39% Job Approval
https://news.gallup.com/poll/547763/bid ... Biden’s Current Rating Worse Than Other Modern Presidents at Same PointLooking at the approval ratings of the past seven presidents at the same point in their first term in office, Biden’s current 39% is the lowest. Barack Obama (43%) and Donald Trump (45%) had slightly higher ratings heading into the year they sought reelection, while all of the others were above 50%.

By the time Trump left office in January 2021, days after the Capitol riot, Trump's average approval rating was 38.6 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight, only just below what Biden is recording in mid-December 2023.7 hours ago
