The outside panels go through such temperature extremes it makes you wonder how they can test the durability of panel adhesives...but they do have ways to perform those tests.
Problem is..if the glue is from a bad batch, or expired [stale], or if the parts to be bonded are not prepped right...etc..etc..
The overall safety record is pretty good and the FAA are the very best at figuring out what went wrong and why it did.

So far, it sounds that way.  IMHO, those "plugs" should be welded in place - not the skin, but at least the structural elements.

Modern cars have plastic body panels nowadays that are held in place by push in plastic rivets...!
You gotta figure that an entire bowel movement  of Queer Libtards from  LEGOS LAND were the ones to pioneer that method..!

Commercial airplanes are still made out of aluminum.  These "plugs" can be welded in place, at least internally they can be.
