Low self esteem I would suspect.

When you complain, ur friends roll their eyes and ur enemies rejoice

"Because I SAY I am" is a todler's tantrum, not "science"

You cannot betray me - only yourself, to me.

And then you have the other extreme.  I worked with and for two Marines who served in Nam.  One was very soft spoken and didn't like to talk about his service...almost meek. His junior high aged daughter convinced him to give a talk at her school about his service and (without telling him) had his medals put in a shadow box.  She presented it to him at school.  He brought it into his office rather than leave it in his old truck.  In that box were 1 Distinguished Service Medal, 1 Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf, and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf.  Our company VP was a retired Lt. Colonel and had a Naval Academy class connection in the Pentagon so he did some digging.  The Silver Star was a downgrade when the guy was recommended for the Medal of Honor. Apparently the meed guy was a bad ***.

YouTube is loaded with Vids of such Scammers being exposed..
This is a Retired Senior Chief Navy SEAL (and Naval Historian) named Don Shipley who has brought outing such scumbags to an entertaining art form.. He and his Wife Diane run a YouTube channel called "Phony Navy Seal of the Week" ..  Shipley specializes in verifying the authenticity of people who claimed to have been SEALS... He's usually contacted by employers, associates, people conducting background checks and others in general who are suspicious of someone claiming to have been SEALS.. Shipley researches them, and when they don't check out, he contacts them and the show begins.. He's posted many Vids of such encounters, and to date has exposed 10,000  frauds claiming to have been SEALs..

This is a fun one.... Shipley gets called by the Mirage Hotel in Vegas to verify a guy claiming to be an Active Duty SEAL, who tried to use his SEAL credentials to get free lodging for him and his wife, along with a special private Meet & Greet Swim with the Dolphins at the resort... The fun begins at 2:15 when Shipley phones the fool, pretending to be a Rep from the Mirage to confirm their reservation & arrangements...
