About 20 to 30 years ago National Geographic devoted an issue to the "Chinese Cave Dwellers".
[From memory].... There were 1 million of these people who live in multi story sandstone caves that have been in continuous  use for 1000 or 2000 years.
As of the date of this article the government had just installed a light bulb and a government controlled TV set in each dwelling. 
There were [or are] times when viewing the government run TV channel is mandatory. 
The government appoints a resident to act as the "Block Warden" and to make sure that everyone is watching the broadcast.
There was also a time when the government forcibly relocated many of these "Cave People" to work at factories in the city but too many of them developed health trouble from  "Culture Shock". 
There was also a fairly recent srtory about a Chinese woman who suffered from gigantism .
She lived in a rural village that made West Virginia look like an episode of The Jetsons...  
She had to be medivac'd to some western hospital as a charity case to get whatever she needed to have done...done for her.
