Croft was under the supervision of the Florida Department of Corrections but had recently cut off his ankle monitor.

McMillan was charged with first-degree murder as well as tampering with evidence. He is currently being held at the Hernando County Detention Center without bond.

Two Florida men allegedly ambushed and murdered another man Monday evening. When police arrived to investigate, they found one of the alleged killers, Dakota Lee Croft, hanging from a tree in the backyard.

Dustin McMillan, 33, told police he and Croft had been drinking and came up with a plan to murder William Scott Trudell "for being a 'cop caller' and disrespecting women in the home," the Hernando County Sheriff's Office wrote in a statement.

When one of Trudell's family members reportedly found his body in the garage, McMillan and Croft rushed to clean up the scene, dragging Trudell's body to a nearby wooded area.

Croft is believed to have hanged himself from the tree after helping clear the garage of evidence.

When police arrived at the residence to conduct a wellness check on Trudell, McMillan initially refused to let them inside the Spring Hill home, located about 50 miles north of Tampa.
