I think there is a big difference between being a racist on the one hand and not being able to - or caring to - sympathize with African Americans and their strongly held animus towards the Confederacy on the other.  I am not implying the former, but am merely stating that I observed the latter.  I  hope you can respect THAT.

This is why I am quickly losing respect for you.  I don't care that they changed the names.  And this is not about African Americans.  This is about white guilt.  Name a group of black people who were screaming for those name changes.  You didn't observe what you thought.

I am perfectly fine with the concept that I need to keep trying to fix the mistakes of my forefathers and never stop striving to create a MORE perfect union as they said I should.  IMHO, slavery was an abomination.  IMHO, the slave-owning, white supremacist assholes of the Confederacy were despicable traitors to the hopes and dreams of those forefathers and we should have NEVER honored them by naming anything of any more significance than a municipal cesspool after any of them and, if we DID **** up and name something of greater significance than that in their honor, there is no time like the present to **** that.  YMMV

I feel your guilty pain and dismiss it as merely a failure in your ability to discern the context of historical realities. You close your eyes and pretend that by not seeing, that events did not really occur. The 1860's slave had a better life than his counterparts who managed to evade being captured and sold by rival tribes. When you manage to open your eyes again, you'll see that there are no slaves and haven't been for 5 or 6 generations....you merely try to change history by erasing your cognizance of it's existence.
