A liberal-liberal?

I ran into a guy I went to grade school with.  Been about 10 years and you know how it is.  You catch up in no time.  I knew he was sort of political in high school and could never stop talking politics.  A political news junkie, too. 
 He’s talking and talking and then says he’s a “liberal-liberal.”  I said “what?”  He repeats it, and then keep talking a mile a minute.  Then, he turns and says, “That’s my bus!”  He runs down the street, gets on the bus, and disappears. 
 He never told me how to get in touch with him and I didn’t either.  Guess I’m now stuck not knowing the meaning of liberal-liberal.
