That's a tough call.  I'd take that Trans Am - always wanted one of those.  But, I remember being 16 and even then, I was infatuated with motorcycles.  A restored Virago would be a real nice bike to ride.  My 1st bike was a Honda CB550.  I thought it was really big and powerful when I bought it too.  I restored it the best I could for being 19 and low on $$$.

Yeah, I'm sure when he hits 18 he will try and make a deal for the Trans Am ......
And by that time his parents and my wife will not be able to legally object ....he will be of legal age to make his own decisions ....
But I won't just give it to him ....he will have to earn it or buy it ....
I rode a CB550 a few times and found it to be a well rounded ride but I loved the Virago more because it is a good solid touring bike ....
and my biggest reason for wanting to give him the Virago ....is because of how easy they can be maintained and how cheap it is on gas ....
My son is a little pissed because the first vehicle I got him when he was 16 was a beat up chevette....that he constantly had to fix to keep it road worthy.
He thinks I'm getting soft ....lol.

I happen to have 2 very similar leather riding jackets.  One made  in the USA, the other in Pakistan. Cafe Racer (that's what its called) style jacket.  The American one uses a slightly more supple leather.  But, the Paki jacket is almost as well made - requires a bit more break-in and conditioning cream to get the "feel" right, but still uses thick leather and breaks the wind. Paki jacket cost about 2/3 what the USA jacket cost.  The Pakis actually make some decent leather products.  Just say'n.  Now, shoot me F-ers for say'n that!!!

I'm more interested in why you feel you need to race from one cafe to the next?

That's probably not going to protect you if you drop your bike.  Might want something a little tougher than that.

You tell your son that Chevy was a lot newer than the Virago!  If you wanted to be a real dick to him, his first car would have been a 1940 Ford Coup.  Yeah, cool today, but I bet it wasn't so cool when your kid was 16.  The Virago is over 40 years old. 

My CB550 was a great motorcycle, but the Virago for sure is a better made bike. Little things I did not like about the CB550

• Carbs were cheaply made.  They would get gunked up easy and start pissing gas all over the place
• The head and the block were should have been machined to better tolerances.  My head gasket leaked and these machines were notorious for having leaky head gaskets.
• Breaks were basic and sort of weak.  Also, I had to rebuild the master cylinder and caliper more than once.
• Drum break in the rear.  Not a big problem, because it really didn't wear much, but PITA to work on.
• Rubber parts would rot out, but easy to replace.
• Chrome parts were prone to rusting
• Stock exhaust made it sound like a freaking Tesla.
• Wiring harness was a bit finicky.

You know, that's a damn good question.  I never understood the term "cafe racer", but its a thing.  I tend to like the style of motorcycle, and the style of jacket!
