43 mushers for this year's race, which is, coincidentally, a standard number for NASCAR starters.

Those racing dogs are treated like kings until they start losing races... then they become a liability to the owners. Life isn't so good for them at that point.

I used to work with a lady that ran a rescue/rehab/re-home operation on her farm that catered to Greyhounds. 

They are actually very sweet and affectionate pups.

Two of them just died in the current race.

Well, not all Greyhound racers mistreat their animals.   It is a business, and the dogs are expected to perform.  But, that isn't necessarily cruel.
