Anything electronic will not work.

When "detonated," an EMP weapon produces a pulse of energy that creates a powerful electromagnetic field capable of short-circuiting a wide range of electronic equipment, particularly computers, satellites, radios, radar receivers and even civilian traffic lights.

all electric systems will fry

Estimates are 98% of population dead in the first year

from what I have read

It would only take a few billion dollars to protect the USA from it

but they don’t

the paranoid in my thinks that “they” are keeping this in their back pocket for total control

I don't know about a landline.  But a nuke will also emit EMP, particularly if it is an air burst.  The technology has been around for decades.  EMP will shut down an area but not destroy it like a nuke would.

Old cars built before everything went electronic should work.

If I've learned anything living in  my climate- one thing i have learned ... You can't be prepared enough... if there's no gas- there's no chainsaws? If there's no electricity- there's no water pumps?

check into a faraday box....not too expensive and easy to make...even a metal trash can could provide some protection for important items

I’m pretty sure that your car would have to be made before the 80s to not be fried

cant remember the details

lol -i gave one away to one of my men friends-- he wanted one for his BIG FAT girlfriend. As  a lawn ornament? she had those Maine top heavy tits?  I shouldn't have done that?
and another time- I gave away hoards of those - bullets. in those orange cases-  my father was a  rifle  instructor?   I was told they could explode- probably worth a fortune? what a dumbo i was?

Cyndi...just about anything that is a modern electronic device that depends on transistors and silicon micro-chip type components is vulnerable.

These guys are saying that a whole lot more than just modern electronic components are vulnerable...https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12443892

If you could get one of those lead blankets they use when you get X-rayed and wrap your car's onboard computer / spark control module in that...that might work.
Otherwise it would be smart to keep an old style distributor / ignition coil and carburetor handy to convert a computer controlled engine over to the way most gas engines worked before 1984 or so.
I don't know enough about modern diesel powered cars to know how vulnerable they are to EMP..or what the "Preppers" would do as "work arounds" to keep a diesel rig running post SHTF.
