If you could get one of those lead blankets they use when you get X-rayed and wrap your car's onboard computer / spark control module in that...that might work.
Otherwise it would be smart to keep an old style distributor / ignition coil and carburetor handy to convert a computer controlled engine over to the way most gas engines worked before 1984 or so.
I don't know enough about modern diesel powered cars to know how vulnerable they are to EMP..or what the "Preppers" would do as "work arounds" to keep a diesel rig running post SHTF.

I was trying to answer your question....  
In the process I learned that  even some of the "Old School" electronic components can be damaged from high voltage discharge through the air. So even the condensor in an old style ignition system could go bad after an EMP. 
If a person was really thinking ahead you would buy every electronic component that it takes to keep your car running and put those parts into safe "EMP Proof" storage.
Even if no EMP ever happens, having those parts handy make it easy for the Home Mechanic to diagnose / repair most engine problems and the cost of those spare  parts will rarely ever be less than what they are today..

How would we find out if it was a EMP attack? We wouldn't have access to TV, phones, or anything that could connect us to the outside world that could keep us updated.
