We always had strays when I was a kid. Never really planned them. They just showed up. The softies in family would take them in. No charge, either.

First off, I probably would avoid a puppy mill, regardless of how cute the designer dogs it produced.
Secondly, I have heard consistently negative things about overly purebred breeds in general so mixed breed mutts are a good bet.
When we came back to Maine after our 80-day road trip around the country (that we were able to finally take because, for the first time in our 25-year marriage, we were pet-free) we got a puppy from an organization out of Lewiston called, Blessed Be The Bullies, that specialized in placing rescue dogs that had some amount of pit bull in them. We initially offered to adopt a mom and one of her litter. Unfortunately, the mom was very aggressive and bit her little daughter so we only took the puppy - who looked nothing like her mom. We did the doggie DNA test and found out that our dog was 50% Mountain Cur - the mother - 25% Brittany Spaniel and 25% Standard Poodle. Mountain Cur's are a southern breed that looks a great deal like a pit bull. Our dog, Bridget, is a delight... very loving, very well behaved, great around other dogs and little kids, AND she doesn't shed!

was. had to put him down, no fault of his own. $25 dollar dog cost me about 2,000 in vet bills.

not really but when I got him from the pound, they tried to deworm him twice and I had to do 3 more treatments, then 6 months later he tested positive for heartworms.
After 6 months of that treatments my son's dog and him didn't get along because my son's dog wouldn't stop trying to play alpha male and my dog tore his up and another 500 vet bill fixing his dog. not to mention trying to separate them mine about took half my thumb off at the first knuckle.
Tried to find him a new home but his record not fault of his nobody wanted him, so I had him put down. Again he was the best companion dog I ever had. do funny crazy **** and like a husky very vocal.

Doodles in general are a good call.
I think pits and bullies are great.
Soft Coated Wheeten Terriers are excellent.
Also Shiba Inu.

They're a handful because they are VERY smart.
One of mine figured out how to open doors, both straight handles and round.
The other figured out how to open their dog food container with that has a screw-on top.
The only thing I would warn about is all 4 of mine have HATED other dogs. Not dislike. HATE.
And people I know with GSDs say the same thing.
Really not that big of an issue except for Vet visits.
Shedding... they shed a LOT. Interestingly, our shorthair sheds a lot more than our longhair.
