Many years ago I had a Great Dane /Dobermann mix. I still miss him.

Secondly, I have heard consistently negative things about overly purebred breeds in general so mixed breed mutts are a good bet.
When we came back to Maine after our 80-day road trip around the country (that we were able to finally take because, for the first time in our 25-year marriage, we were pet-free) we got a puppy from an organization out of Lewiston called, Blessed Be The Bullies, that specialized in placing rescue dogs that had some amount of pit bull in them. We initially offered to adopt a mom and one of her litter. Unfortunately, the mom was very aggressive and bit her little daughter so we only took the puppy - who looked nothing like her mom. We did the doggie DNA test and found out that our dog was 50% Mountain Cur - the mother - 25% Brittany Spaniel and 25% Standard Poodle. Mountain Cur's are a southern breed that looks a great deal like a pit bull. Our dog, Bridget, is a delight... very loving, very well behaved, great around other dogs and little kids, AND she doesn't shed!

Well you live in an apartment complex so the only dogs suitable for people like you are the miniature "SQUEAK TOY" varieties.....

[BTW..the main difference between Labs and Goldens is their price and the length of their fur.]
There are no finer dogs. They absolutely live to please us and it's no wonder why they are at the top of most popularity lists.

So I started boarding dogs...
I've done about 1200 dog nights, including a 10 week stretch with a golden. Sitting another right now....who is showing signs of improvement.
They are both willful and not very bright.

Was convinced it couldn't climb stairs..
The dog you speak of could have had a hip problem or even sight problems..
Sounds like you might not be qualified to handle dogs if that possibility never occurred to you.

Goldens are a relatively new breed and "small pool", they're inclined to cancer....and they weren't bred to be bright.

It's safe to say they know a little bit more about this than you do....
They developed the definitive test procedure that keeps them from wasting time trying to train dogs that won't be adoptable as Guide Dogs.

Poodles and shepherds are smart....the rest are conditioned.

Mine had exactly ZERO training for birds.
He found me everything....quail, pheasant, duck, woodcock...the first time.
They were trained to herd fish into nets.
It's a whole different level of intelligence.

I've had 2 Rottweilers, both females.
They were AWESOME dogs, but not the brightest animals I've ever encountered.
