Probably a small Golden Doodle. Trainable, playful, likes kids, typically won't piss or **** in your house after trained, relatively few genetic problems, and they don't shed. 

I don't need nor want a guard dog any longer.  Tired of big dogs that eat too much, **** too much, are difficult to travel with, and die early on you.  And, one Jack Russel in a lifetime is enough for me.

We have a small female German Shorthair Pointer.
She is glorious. Small for the breed at only 50lbs.

My last 4 dogs have been German Shepards.  I have 2 now. 
They're a handful because they are VERY smart. 

One of mine figured out how to open doors, both straight handles and round. 
The other figured out how to open their dog food container with that has a screw-on top.

The only thing I would warn about is all 4 of mine have HATED other dogs.  Not dislike.  HATE.   
And people I know with GSDs say the same thing.
Really not that big of an issue except for Vet visits. 

Shedding... they shed a LOT.  Interestingly, our shorthair sheds a lot more than our longhair.

Oh I believe that. My uncle had those. Very smart. I don't want a dog smarter then me.

but you are, the dog isn't. the dog is good natured about understanding living in real time, you aren't.

If you like Big Dogs (big poo everywhere, lots of hair, big food costs and big vet bills), then a Red Setter can't be beat!

Yes train great great grandchildren like you want a family pet to perform socially between competing ideas life isn't self evident and intellectual souls are allowed to inherit the earth until dead/extinction whichever arrives last.

One little glitch to that perfect life scenario, evolving ancestrally here doesn't exceed the time life evolved so far in series parallel behavior of the current 5 generation gaps occupying space here now.

Point being goldies are great, my wife and I have one, but life includes all things present in series parallel evolving so discussing the dogs doesn't change the chaos this species is doing to itself 24/7 while this topic distracts from the rest simultaneously taking place never being corrected on purpose.
