So shrugged the ancient historian Livy (59 B.C.-17 A.D.) of the long decline of Roman national character that, in his age, finally ended the Roman Republic.
Like a patient whose medicine proves worse than the disease, Livy lamented that the Romans knew that they had become corrupt and lawless.

But the very contemplation of the hard medicine needed for restoration -- and the furious reaction that would meet the remedy -- made it impossible to save the patient. America is nearing such an impasse.

We know that no state can long exist after opening its borders to over 7 million illegal aliens, requiring neither background checks nor legality.
The recent murder of a Georgia female jogger by an illegal alien and the savage beating of New York policemen by similar others hardly merit media attention.

Everyone knows that neither new appropriations nor new laws are needed to secure the border as it was in 2020. 
Instead, we could just stop suicidal catch-and-release, deport lawbreakers, privilege the legal over the illegal immigrant, demand would-be refugees apply for asylum first in their native countries, finish the border wall, and pressure Mexico to stop undermining the territorial integrity of its northern neighbor.
But then we shrug, "We can't do that" -- paralyzed in fear of being smeared as "xenophobic," "nativist," or "racist."

So this generation apparently feels that it can endure the collateral damage of daily assaults on American citizens, the near bankruptcy of our cities, and 100,000 fentanyl deaths per year -- but certainly not the idea that it is somehow not politically correct or compassionate.

  I love golf, but Im terrible.  Beer makes it more fun.

I was never any good but I like the game.
My goal is to someday be like those old guys that hit straight up the middle and never lose a ball because it only goes 180 yards.

Thats my step-dad. 86yo and fit.  He plays once per week. 
Sort of a half swing - hockey like.  Straight as an arrow.

I had an older friend (recently passed) who would hit the ball like that and say "That's a shame."
Because he claimed he was a pretty good golfer long ago and lost it with age.
Even though he said that once in a while he still loved the game.
 
Edit add:

It just dawned on me that a phrase that has been used when one of our more annoying golfers takes WAAAAY too long to swing, then **** it up:
"Paralysis by analysis".

How appropriate to the OP.  We study the living **** out of everything in the US but never really seem to do anything practical.
That Six Flags opening thread is a great example.
Feral beasts out of control. . . Again.

Must suck to have been really good and then lose it to age.  I can see that.

Im in no danger of that.  Even when I played fairly often in the 30s/40s - 

a 95 was reason to buy beers for everyone.

I wasn't around during this but right after Coleman Young killed it people were sorry.
S.T.R.E.S.S. Units roamed the streets and people were way more polite and kept bad acting off the sidewaks.
Stop The Robberies-Enjoy Safe Streets
An unmarked car with four big **** riding around was a STRESS unit.
If they stopped to "chat", you were NOT going to argue.

Yeah, I guess the STRESS guys were TOO effective. Roughed up a few too many, maybe a couple of bystanders, I don't remember how they got busted up. The exact "reason", that is.
Like I said: The regular folks weren't afraid. Lurking *** really hated them because it was **** with their daily activities.
After that got shut down, White Boy Rick era type **** got big. Special codes on pagers (before cell phones) kept the **** organized. 
Everybody knew about it but nothing really was done that made much difference.

Giving into and bowing to all forms of deviance seems
to be the new norm.  Not sure how can recover.

Seems like the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Loud, annoying, whiny, relentless assholes end up setting policy.
The quiet workaday, steady and rational get backseated. Which is way too unfortunate.
Our rules and societal norms get so **** up.

if someone from another country commits a crime they should be punished by american laws and put in american jails. most murders committed by illegals who were deported for prior offenses. they learn they can commit a crime in the us and only be deported, not jailed.

True, but all these various deviant groups are RADICAL.
Their LIFE is their agenda.  Obsessed with controlling the levers of power.
Whereas, 80% of folks are just trying pay bills and take care of family.

The intense fervor over in the "news" is nothing but mere conversation and eye-rolling to most people.
They just want to live their days without incident.
Like traffic blockades, parades, queers in elementary schools, not to mention wars and ****.
