We were fortunate enough to be in the direct path of the 2017 event and it was wild to see.

It went as dark as midnight in the middle of the day for about 7 minutes I believe it was. The dusk and dawn moments were the weirdest. When the sun stared winking out, the birds and crickets started going nuts.

It's worth the effort to travel a bit to get in the path of you've never experienced one.

I beg to differ. I've been in the direct center of the moon's shadow (more than once).
Yes, it is eerie and almost awe-inspiring... nature and ****.

But it does NOT get black as midnight.
Please seat yourself.

I did in Lebanon TN in 2017, which was considered a dead center path location of the track.

I was as dark as a moonless night where we were, and the sky was full of stars and everything.

Just a few miles south, it wasn't the same, from what people said.

It probably seemed that dark because your eyes hadn't adjusted fully.
Totality doesn't last very long at all.
Technically absolute dead center of the umbra (moon's shadow) races right over you.
You're not even at the absolute darkest for more than a few seconds.

Light meter measurements would prove me right on this.
Please seat yourself.

I believe you about measuring the light.

I was surprised to see the stars for sure.

I expected only a dimming, but there was a dusk and dawn, with several minutes of dark sky in the middle.

If I had been asleep, and woke up at that precise moment, you couldn't have convinced me it wasn't the middle of the night. That's how dark it was.

Not even close.  What actually happens, that I've never seen mentioned, is that everything take on an unusual coloration for some reason.

Yes, **** close. Absolutely spot on, in fact.

The odd colorization is because the corona produces a different wavelength.
THAT is the only light reaching Earth. Normally it is way overwhelmed by the full sun.

Thanks for proving my point.

****** were the very first people to discover Solar Eclipses...[well that's only because the first bipedal hominins to be identified as humans were in SS Africa]]
Here's an article about the various archaic versions of Homo Sapiens Africanus [Negroids] and what the evolutionary differences are.

It's debatable whether or not they actually realized that anything special had just happened.

Why do people make such a big deal out of natural timing between perpetual balancing objects overlapping in such events that happen exactly as they balance into events so far.

Because it is a rarity, that a whole lot of people go their entire lives without ever seeing.

I was in my 50s before I experienced one, and there is a good chance it will be the only time in my life I will experience.

I consider myself lucky.

But most seeing it call it an act of God or higher intellect than their mind can translate socially.

Extra reply...

I reread your post and realize I took it as your saying my post was wrong.
I just happened to be skimming along and now see you're agreeing that
the darkness is "not even close" to midnight...

Whew... I feel better now.
I had to get out of the "Chatroom Mode" we all can fall into now and then...

In Michigan, same thing. I've seen northern lights many times.
It's always pretty cool.
