The town I live in is nice and clean and quiet. We have festivals downtown a couple of times a month that are family friendly and crime is so low you hardly notice it. They pretty much roll the sidewalks up at dark most nights, weekends excluded.
It's called getting what you vote for... and NYC has gotten exactly what it voted for.
Good on 'em I say.

We have a trolly system that runs during business hours during the week to get the people that don't drive to the doctor and grocery and such, but that's the extent of our "public transit" here.
I think they run three routes on M, W, & F... and two routes on T&T.
Looks like a very nice spread you got there. Are the fish worth eating out of that lake?
