There are 16 hours a day that we are awake.
I spent 2 of those hours every work day commuting to and from work for about 30 years.
I would have gladly worked four 10 hour days instead of working five 8 hour days....one more day to spend on myself.
then if the Contractor really needed me to come into work [on by far the worst traffic day of the week]...then all day Friday is for "time-and-a-half" pay.
In some lines of work that require considerable time to get "set up" and more time to put things away at the end of the day...one less working day on the schedule can be advantageous for the Employer too.

Our plant varied hours depending upon production needs. Being we were 24 hrs, eights was the norm. OT sat and DT sun. Then someone came up with the bright idea where we worked 4 crews of 12's with sat at straight time and OT on sun...

 I loved it as win win...you were already there, so what 4 more as my commute was 30 minutes. I got half my life off and weekends was of additional benefit as there was no management around...

I will admit though that all the time off cost me financially...easy to spend money on projects, golf, etc...almost to the point where I almost couldn't afford all the time off...   almost...

I believe there are studies that show work related accidents increase during the overtime hours...?
Imagine how much more time  young adults could devote to putting some "Sweat Equity" into building their dream on the homestead with that much time off.

the company I worked for tried 4 10s

after a while, attention to detail really declined 

accidents increased

they gave it up after 6 months

36 hours a week is leaving 4 days a week open. Don't some fire fighters work 24 on and 24 off, but I don't think they actually work 72 or 96 hours a week.
