Not at D Day.
He signed up on the morning of Pearl Harbor for the Army Air Corps and flew 84 missions in a P47 while stationed at St Trond Belgium.
By the time he got down to the Armed Forced Induction Center [after hearing about the attack], there was already a line of angry young men wrapped around the block.
Most were trying to join the Navy and get sent to fight Japs. 
Dad tried at first to sign with the Navy but they detected a heart murmur. 
Well the Army wasn't as choosy and so Dad ended up earning 11 Air Medals and 2 Bronze Stars by the time he was 21.
[30 years later at the same AFEES induction center the Army doctor detected scoliosis with me.
I told him that wasn't possible and  asked for a 2nd opinion.
They flew me by helicopter from Alameda to the SF VA hospital, the doctor there said I was good to go, then they flew me back to Alameda to continue with the in processing.
This got done in just a few hours..!]
