Ukraine is too corrupt to join NATO, the U.S. is set to tell leader Volodymyr Zelensky in a major blow to his nation's security ambitions. The defence bloc will request at its annual summit next week, in Washington DC, that Ukraine takes 'additional steps before formal membership talks progress', a senior U.S. official told the Telegraph. Zelensky has been pushing for NATO ascension after Russia 's brutal invasion ends to protect itself from future invasion, as the pact compels its members to militarily defend allies if they are attacked. But corruption, among other issues, has been a major thorn in the Ukrainian leader's side, blocking further relations with the West from developing. In 2022, after Ukraine formally applied for EU ascension, the EU Commission wrote of Ukraine that while 'preventing and combating corruption has been particularly high on the Ukrainian reform agenda since the Revolution of Dignity' in 2014, 'corruption remains a serious challenge.' Zelensky appears to be tackling the problem head on, particularly in the military. In September, he fired all six of his deputy defence ministers with no explanation weeks after dismissing his top defence minister. The U.S. has recognised his efforts, with a State Department official telling the Telegraph: 'We have to step back and applaud everything that Ukraine has done in the name of reforms over the last two-plus years.'

America determines that Ukraine is too corrupt to join a corrupt alliance. Yet, we have no problem sending them billions of dollars. God this world. Has this world ever had a time when there wasn't so many evil idiots running it?

He referred to the corruption that he observed between 2008-16, when he was VP.    This would have been under the previous Russian backed President Poroshenko.

The reason stated for Biden's present objections to NATO membership, is the possibility of U.S. troops being sent to Ukraine. Which we would be obligated to do if Ukraine was a member.

Mr Zelensky has pushed for Ukraine to be granted swift entry to Nato after the war is over, arguing Vladimir Putin is likely to stage another invasion before long.

Membership of the alliance would compel the US and western nations to come to the defence of Ukraine in the event of any Russian attack, under Article 5 of the Nato treaty.

Mr Biden said: “I am not prepared to support the Nato-isation of Ukraine,” adding he had seen “significant corruption” in Ukraine when he visited as vice president.

However, he warned that the West still has a duty to prevent Kyiv falling to Russia, as it would quickly see Poland and other bordering nations “go down” too.

Mr Biden has previously spoken of his desire to avoid US soldiers coming into direct conflict with Russia, something that could presage an escalation into nuclear war.
