well under feudalism the social construct was that the people with the most power also had to literally be the front line on the battlefield. in fact, if you were a member of the elite under feudalism, you could expect to have a violent death.

That seems to me like a more natural and 'fair' social construct. If you are putting your actual life on the line then it makes sense that you would demand relatively more power. 

The development of the musket and therefore conscription and profesional armies kinda ruined that dynamic. It simply isn't practical anymore because there is nothing that 20 knights could possibly do against 200k mechanized infantry.

the reason why political philosophy is needed at all is because technology changes faster than our natural evolved instincts.
