“She said NEVER get into the stock market [back] in the early 1980s”My grannie, who made it through the depression, told me in the early 1980s.
She created a nest egg for a relative, and she was terrified when she died, another relative was going to take the nest egg and put it in the stock market. I was supposed to stop him if that was starting to happen.
Never happened that I know of. But she said NEVER get into the stock market. Many folks felt like that.
The advice is mixed. I got out in 2006 (a little too early) and missed the 40% haircut everyone took. I did not get back in. I have grown it other ways, but inflation is pissing me off.
More than likely, she, or her parents went through the Great Depression...you're a ****...LowIQTrash » 16 Jul 2024, 5:50 pm » wrote: ↑ “She said NEVER get into the stock market [back] in the early 1980s”

People lost everything and killed themselves in '29 when the market crashed...where do you think the folklore of people hiding money in their mattresses and burying it in coffee cans in the backyard came from? Picking bottoms and highs is chasing fools gold...if it was so easy, everyone would do it...LowIQTrash » 17 Jul 2024, 11:38 am » wrote: ↑ Yes I know what happened during the GD
Actually the vast majority of people back then weren’t invested in stocks (or were lightly invested). They were too poor to speculate more than a few weeks wages.
It was the fallout from debt deflation that killed the “real economy.”
And the joke remains. You buy at bottoms…which happens to be 1932 (if you did you would’ve made 500% return in about 5 yrs) and…the early 80s.
