The joke is the idiot measuring the TV is measuring the wrong way...the "50 inch" refers to the diagonal size of the screen. Nothing wrong with using a tape measure, inches don't change length depending on the measuring tool used.

Well...technically it is.  Just nobody with any knowledge at all would call it a retractable ruler.
