It's a post nuclear war, dystopian-future novel set in Australia - the last outpost of humanity. Expats from every nation are gathered there like flotsam and jetsam, and everyone knows that the radiation which wiped out every human being in the other nations is headed their way. Already reports from Northern Queensland carry doom. There simply is no question that they all are going to die.

The leading characters in the novel transform from sensible persons to joyous daredevils, racing jalopies and tempting Death in spectacular ways. Having lost all, they are living to the fullest and swinging for the fences in a mighty and precious respite of unknown but short duration. It is pure schadenfreude.

St. Francis de Assisi is credited with saying, "If I knew the world were ending tomorrow, I would still plant a tree today."

Playing the game as if it were still afoot is always good form - always good form. It's okay to wink at the crowd, of course - but play like the game isn't yet decided, unless you have a plan with better promise. In which case, go with that.

I think it would be a fatal error to NOT immediately rally around Harris.   The last time we held the convention in Chicago, it was a no-drama re-nomination of Bill Clinton, but the time before that, in 1968, there WAS drama and Nixon ended up beating Humphrey.  The powers that be need to quickly huddle with Harris and pick the running mate that will help her win.  Kelly from Arizona would be good.... astronaut..
