Sometimes, I think that, just maybe, it's some sort of loyalty test. He says crazier and crazier things all the time, just waiting for some portion of the MAGA faithful to spit out the scrotum and just say that that last one was just too **** wacky to keep being on his team. Then, he would know his limit. As long as he wasn't quite THAT crazy, he could hold his base. And, then, if he ever won the election, he would be able to easily segue from SAYING crazy things to DOING crazy things, and it would just seem like more of the same.

At the RNC Convention he filled up his time slot with a pretty well organized flow of message traffic that sounded ad lib to some degree and very well stated. 
I seriously doubt you would have been able to grab a hot microphone and do any better for an hour under the bright lights and millions of people tuned in..
