That is the same dilemma that modern employers have. There are so many qualified applicants for every position that every one of those employers could very easily fill all of their open positions with only white Anglo-Saxon men..... BUT WHY WOULD THEY? If there are equally qualified candidates - some women, some people of color, some gay or lesbian, why NOT diversify and include some of those other folks so that your workforce and your management team look like a cross-section of America instead of the Aryan Brotherhood?
The qualifications for Vice President and President are pretty **** subjective beyond the three in the constitution. We have had ALL SORTS of different backgrounds, educational levels, and skill sets. Some less-educated guys did a bang-up job, and some brainiacs with uber-fancy resumes didn't.
If you are the presidential nominee, why NOT go find a fully qualified VP candidate who is NOT your same gender, your same ethnicity, or even your same sexual orientation? If the personal chemistry between the two of them is positive. If the presidential candidate believes that his (or her) VP choice shares values, will have their backs, and would be capable of stepping in and finishing the term, who are WE to denigrate that decision?
