There was no party switch. That's not even possible. Do you think the powers that be all got together and said "hey, I like you guys. Your policies are great. I think we will take them and then you all can have ours. "?

Johnson simply pulled a dishonest trick. He needed the black vote, so he pandered to them by giving them all sorts of carrots to dangle in front of them. It worked. The blacks left the Repubs to join the dems. Of course, that didn't sit well with the white supremacists. They didn't want to be associated with a party that had blacks, so they ran over to the Repubs. The repubs didn't want them, they got stuck with them. 

The dems were the racist party then and they remain  the racist party now.
