My dad was unexpectedly laid off last week at 59 years old after 37 years with his company. There was no warning, no severance, no thank you, nothing.
He was hoping to retire within the next few years. This is his first time looking for a job since he was in his 20's, and obviously a lot has changed.
I'm in my early 20s, and have only had 2 jobs so I'm not sure how much help I can provide. I helped him redesign his resume and set up a profile on LinkedIn.
I've tried to show him some basics of AI, gave him tips on using LinkedIn, and gave some resume advice (like taking off graduation years so employers won't know how old he is before meeting him).
Does anyone have any advice or was in a similar situation that worked out in the end? He's already applied for unemployment and they're looking into healthcare options, but he needs to find new employment soon.
My mom cannot work, and he was the sole provider prior to losing his job. Morale is pretty low right now in my family.
sorry to hear that...unfortunately his age is what it's all about...happened to me at 57 albeit under different circumstances...LowIQTrash » 12 Sep 2024, 3:28 am » wrote: ↑ “Did he dress up nicely, walk into an office building, smile, and shake the hiring manager’s hand?”
Why do I assume this isn't about your family, but you copy and pasting someone else telling a story, regardless it actually happened or some scene from art and reality projections of social results going forward daily?LowIQTrash » 12 Sep 2024, 3:28 am » wrote: ↑ “Did he dress up nicely, walk into an office building, smile, and shake the hiring manager’s hand?”

Thank you for condolences, ROG, but this isn’t my dad.ROG62 » 12 Sep 2024, 3:54 am » wrote: ↑ sorry to hear that...unfortunately his age is what it's all about...happened to me at 57 albeit under different circumstances...
without knowing what his skills are, it's impossible to make recommendations....
what I've found is no one will want to hire based solely on "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I always thought "friggin retired"...lol
like dating, looking for a job after 37 years sucks...He's going to have to convince them to take a chance....hard sell...
If he's quick on his feet, no problem, but if he's a thinker like me, it's an issue as we have a tendency to either fumble or say stupid **** while processing questions...
good luck...

I imagine the story is real. They will appreciate your sympathy…
Getting laid off at 57 is terrible.
