The Chinese are capable of manufacturing to high quality standards if it makes good business sense for them to do so.
They also make a lot of absolute junk that has a high failure rate.
For example.... rechargeable battery packs.
They can sell them for such a low price that Americans can buy 4 of them[direct from importers] for the same price you would pay at the store. If 1 or 2 packs out of the batch of 4 fail ...the American consumer still feels like he came out ahead.

Have the Chinese infiltrated the USA gun market much...?

So true...I've had really good luck with their impact sockets...other than that, I'll buy stuff from them for one off uses...

HF has improved to the point where I'm satisfied with their power tools overall. 
My most recent purchases are a roto hammer, router, sawzall, jig saw, 120 volt drill motor, several cheap "throw away" HVLP paint guns [that I've shot automotive paint jobs with] a 3500 watt gasoline powered generator and a gasoline powered pressure washer.
For grinding wheels and cut off wheels...HF is all that I buy.

a friend swears by their angle grinders...

they do make a steel cutting blade for a circular saw that works awesome on ribbed steel for pole barns...did a 36 x 48 post frame building this summer...it was flawless...
 
I still have my dad's craftsman 1/2" and 3/4" drive and wrench set from the 60's...use them all the time...
