Illiterate people don’t understand the benefits of social programs and safety nets over the long term. They are constantly being sold as wasteful and anti free market rather than an important way to distribute the wealth of the nation in multiple ways to make life, access, education, infrastructure and services better and more ubiquitous for everyone. But it’s always the “I’m not using it so why should I pay for it” people who eventually need these services and fail to see the irony of their position.
