It's hard to imagine what sort of autonomous navigation system would be able to see it's way through an upper atmosphere that we've [hopefully] had just enough time to saturate with high energy counter measures as part of our first response.

Whoever the Duty Officer in charge happens to be working grave yard shift that night..would be North America's last hope to see to it that our land based missiles get launched in time.
WE MUST HAVE a contingency plan like this that bypasses the President and even our highest ranking military commanders who will all be sound asleep.

Our missile defense systems are entirely irrelevant. These missiles move at mach 20. Our defensive missiles move at mach 5.5. Triggernometry is a hard science. Both America & Russia used to keep nuclear armed bombers in the skies 24/7 everyday but Intercontinental Missles made bomber planes obsolete

Only USA , Russia, China & India possess the Full Nuclear Triad thats the ability 2 deliver a 2nd strike with Nuclear Warheads if one was ever fired
Britain , France, Isreal , North Korea Pakistan also have Nuclear Weapons but on a much smaller scale and do not possess full Nuclear Triad capabilities neither
