I went to a K through 8 school that was part of a 6 school district that had 2000 kids or more.
During this time I never heard of any kids at my school who died , or any kids from the other schools that died.
None of us kids had any fear of the mumps, measles or chicken pox and I don't know of any classmates who made it through their childhoods without catching these diseases.

Small pox and polio we were vaccinated for.
Polio was an annual shot until the Magic Sugar Cube  came out that was "good for life" IIRC.
