The character was much better than the actor than the man who played him. In reality, Caroll O'Connor was every bit as liberal as Rob Reiner. Two F-ing meat-heads.

He was a good actor, I'll give him that. Just know he campaigned for Ted Kennedy. Against, Jimmy Carter, whom Caroll O'Connor considered a "Republican". In other words, Jimmy Carter was too conservative for the real Archie Bunker. Which in itself was a lie. The truth is, O'Connor was a Catholic, so was Kennedy (in theory, anyway), and Carter was a real Southern Baptist - that is until 2000 when he rejected Southern Baptists. If Richard Nixon was an Irish Catholic running Tamany Hall in the late 1800's, Carrol O'Connor would have supported Nixon.

At least the producers of All in the Family depicted a Black character as a bigot [George Jefferson]...but the Jewish Producers depicted Jefferson as a smart bigot and Archie Bunker as the stupid bigot..[of course].
