Someone I know picked up something similar to this for about $50 years ago.  I think they run about $130.  These are intended to fit inside a 37mm or 40mm flare/grenade launcher.  It uses one center-fire rifle primer to "blast" the array of firing pins into the 22lr rims, causing all rounds to fire at one time.

When you mentioned a home made booby trap, this little gem came to mind.

I can visualize how  spring loaded firing pins can get their push from a single gas driven piston all at once.
$130 / per ....I wonder what their cost is to manufacture these...?

Here's one on gunbroker - you can see how it breaks down.   BTW, some are rifled, some aren't. There were several manufactures who made these. I'm surprised that BATFE didn't rule these things a MG because it fires more than 1 shot with a pull of the trigger.  https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1094652426

In fact, it was the beehive that inspired me to design a way to turn a COP 357 into a gun that could fire 2 or 4 .357 rounds at one time.  I took one apart and looked at the internals - could be done with some simple welding. I don't know how well the top break mechanism would hold up, though.

 Well in terms of being able to fire 12 rounds  in the least amount of time, this gun doesn't look like it would win many of those contests so maybe that's why the BATF allowed it...? 

It would be fun to shoot though.

The COP 357?  It's basically a double-action 4-shot derringer with the worst trigger you've ever experienced. Fires only 1 shot at a time. You would need to weld a piece of metal to the internally ratcheting striker plate to get it to fire more than one shot at a time. It has 4 separate firing pins and every time the trigger is pulled, it causes the striker-plate to ratchet to strike the next firing pin.

LOL!  That's probably why they are no longer in business.

I bought it because I liked the design.  I never intend on actually using the thing!  Most of the guns I buy are because I like something about their design or construction.  If you don't buy the damn thing, you can't take it apart.  And, if you can't take it apart, you can't study its manufacturing quality and design.
