The average adult in America has only a 7th grade reading level. In short, the average adult, in America, can fill out a form, understand basic commands, and comprehend social media posts that are written at a 5th grade level. 

• I know the racists here will say it's because of all of the blacks in the ghetto areas. They are throwing the average off. Nope. Though, they are also embarrassingly low, their scores are no different than many whites. 
• Some will say it's because of lack of funding....nope. There is evidence that a large percentage of affluent areas are just as dumb. 
• Some will say it's because of the curriculum. Nope. Private schools, with superior curriculums, are also producing dumbasses. 

So Vegas, what is the reason? My answer: I have no idea. I really don't. The only rational explanation that I can come up with is that Americans are spoiled. We have the luxury of being stupid without the consequences. As long as our society has their phones and social media, then that is good enough for us.

In the good ole days if you didn't make the grade you got held back. Today kids get pushed through the system by parents and teachers, I think that's a mistake.

They still get held back, but you can only hold them back so many times. Otherwise, they would be graduating 25 yr olds. They have to push them through.

When I was a kid, Whites were about 85 percent of the population.
I think our academic proficiency ranked very well among the rest of the world.
Fast forward 60 years and our White population has shrunk to about 65 percent.
The increase of Blacks and Browns has done nothing but lower our academic standards and our national IQ as well.
I hope I don't get charged with a Hate Crime now........

Good point, but what's the purpose of holding a kid back if the school doesn't have the resources (or parents involved) to work out the problem?

One thing is for sure, it was well past time to put the DOE into the grave. The states will do better I hope.

The Wife's caseload is mainly K-3, there are some messed up kids out there.
