Russia does not want Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia - or any other men-in-dresses fruitcake western sickness. Russia wants to the Dnieper - the ethnic Russian Oblasts. You don't need a big brain to understand no Russian leader wants NATO missiles on his border. That prospect is the genesis of this war - along with actual nazis murdering ethnic Russians on their border. Russia is going to turn whatever mess is left of western Coupkraine into a hard stop against the west - which Putin just wants nothing to do with at this point. The west forced Putin to adapt to life without their trade - and he's just fine with the status quo.

The lead that everyone is burying is this question: What will Coupkraine look like when this is over? There is strong reason to suppose that Romainians, Poles, and Hungarians, who were gerrymandered against their will into Coupkraine by Kruschev, will try for rehoming in their respective countries. And under UN rules as enforced in Kosovo, they have an excellent chance of success against the floating corpse that Coupkraine will be by 2026. And they have the freshly rehomed ethnic Russian provinces as an immediate successful template.

Then there are Moldova and Transnistria. Moldova wants its land back. Transnistria wants it sovereignty recognized and will jump at the chance to grab a few kilometers of land to gain access to the east bank of the Danube and thereby access the Black Sea. Any chaos WILL be exploited, and ya can't blame them. Being landlocked sucks. So we have the looming spectre of western hypocrites - perfectly justifiably, whatever the optics - snacking like hyenas on the corpse the lion mauled while they screeched about it. Such humiliation - and they'll be helpless to resist. I would certainly be helpless to resist, optics be damned.

I can almost see Putin laughing his *** off when the west of Coupkraine becomes the object of a western gang rape involving no fewer than three NATO countries which are also EU countries - after all the **** moralizing and high toned rhetoric. It will shake NATO to its core - Brussels to its core. It will humiliate the west. But it's NECESSARY. It's inevitable, unless there is some deus ex machina, david copperfield prestidigitation that no one can foresee. And there won't be. 

I say that it's necessary and inevitable because of the historical, ethnic, and geographical forces at play. The Poles who were excised and shotgun-married to Coupkraine WANT Polish reunification. They always did, but ESPECIALLY now. They've been savaged by the nazification of Coupkraine, bullied to give up their language and ethnic identity or suffer state sanctions. Their children are being force-educated in Ukrainian, after generations of salutary neglect. Ditto the Hungarian and Romainian minorities, which have also been bullied and which have never stopped thinking of reunification with their homeland as their proper estate. All three of these populations are veritable kidnap victims, and ransom is naturally going to be uppermost on their minds - ESPECIALLY when their kidnapper becomes first a brutal bully and then in short order a failed state incapable of preventing or punishing their plebiscites for reunification.
